Thanks to Lake Superior’s unique climate effect, our region experiences cool autumn days and truly eye-popping fall colors that typically arrive around mid-September and often linger through October. Towards the end of August, the watch is on as locals start to keep their eyes peeled for the first signs of that glorious transformation!
We’ve outlined how you can immerse yourself in this spectacular natural show, capturing the beautiful fall foliage around our city and along the North Shore – whether you choose to explore by land, by water, or by air. Get ready for a refreshing and rugged autumn adventure!
By Land: Experience Autumn’s Embrace

On Foot & Two Wheels: Hiking & Biking Trails
Lace up your boots or clip into your pedals! Our diverse trails offer intimate experiences with the vibrant fall landscape, from gentle strolls to challenging climbs.

- Bagley Nature Area: Tucked into the northwest part of the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) campus, the Bagley Nature Area features 59 acres that beautifully blend forest, pond, and open spaces. Its diverse hiking trails are perfect for leaf peeping, birding, and simply relaxing amidst the autumn splendor.
- Chambers Grove Park: Located where the St. Louis River meets Lake Superior, Chambers Grove Park offers fantastic fall views. It features access to the St. Louis River and the Duluth Traverse mountain bike trail, along with a picnic pavilion, grills, and a lovely walking trail – ideal for a relaxed autumn afternoon.
- Chester Park: Nestled along Chester Creek, Chester Park boasts miles of scenic hiking trails that come alive with fall colors. Visitors can also enjoy picnic facilities and playground equipment at Chester Bowl. Don’t miss the Fall Fest Chester Bowl hosts each September, featuring live music, crafts, locally grown produce, and kids’ activities.
- Ely’s Peak: For a more invigorating hike with truly sweeping views of the changing leaves, head to Ely’s Peak. Just a few steps away, explore the Ely Tunnel, a fascinating 500-foot-long abandoned railroad tunnel through basalt, which is part of Duluth’s DWP Trail Corridor in the Magney-Snively Parks. You can find parking for the tunnel at the Munger Trailhead or Short Line Park, offering a rugged and surprising autumn adventure.
- Enger Tower: Standing five stories high, Enger Tower offers unparalleled panoramic views of the glimmering Lake Superior and the abundant, fiery fall foliage blanketing the hillsides below. (Note that access typically closes for the season when the snow arrives, so plan your visit accordingly!)
- Glensheen Mansion Grounds: The meticulously maintained grounds of this historic lakefront mansion provide a stunning fall landscape. Stroll through the vibrant gardens and along the shoreline, enjoying the autumn colors against the grand architecture of Glensheen Mansion. Admission to the grounds is just $5 for adults, and free for children under 15 with a paid adult. Members are also free.
- Hartley Park: A fantastic place with an extensive trail system for both hiking and mountain biking, Hartley Park also features the Hartley Nature Center, which provides educational opportunities amidst the fall colors.
- Hawk Ridge: Beyond witnessing the awe-inspiring migration of approximately 76,000 raptors each fall, visitors to Hawk Ridge can traverse four miles of exceptional hiking trails and take in the unique geology, diverse flora, and abundant wildlife, all set against a backdrop of brilliant autumn hues and Lake Superior views.
- Lakewalk: For a flatter, easily accessible journey, the Lakewalk stretches for more than seven miles along the shore of Lake Superior, providing stunning views year-round.
- Lester Park: Located in East Duluth, Lester Park features more than nine miles of varied hiking and mountain biking trails that wind through beautiful fall forests. The Lester River Rendezvous takes place every September, featuring food, crafts, and entertainment.
- Spirit Mountain: Take in the truly spectacular fall scenery from atop Spirit Mountain! From this vantage point, you’ll see a vast tapestry of autumn colors. For a thrilling way to experience the foliage up close, head down the Timber Twister Alpine Coaster at the Adventure Park, where the trees whip by in a blur of color!
- Superior Hiking Trail: Duluth is home to a magnificent 41-mile portion of both the 300-plus-mile Superior Hiking Trail (SHT) and the epic 4,800-mile North Country National Scenic Trail. These trails offer rugged and rewarding hiking through stunning forests ablaze with fall colors, often with dramatic overlooks of Lake Superior.
- Any of Duluth’s City Parks: With more than 6,800 acres of parkland, Duluth offers a variety of city parks that transform into vibrant canvases of fall foliage. Simply explore any neighborhood park for a beautiful glimpse of the autumn landscape.
Scenic Drives: Autumnal Panoramas
For those who prefer to soak in the colors from the comfort of their car, Duluth’s scenic drives offer breathtaking, expansive views of the autumn landscape and Lake Superior.

- Haines Road: Stretching from West Duluth to the Miller Hill Mall area, cruising this winding road is a beautiful way to take in the fall colors, offering a relaxed and immersive experience.
- North Shore Scenic Drive & Highway 61: Duluth makes a fantastic home base for day trips up the North Shore Scenic Drive, which spans 154 miles of breathtaking views of Lake Superior’s rugged shoreline. This officially designated All-American Road leads you past countless vibrant forests and charming towns.
- Skyline Parkway: A dramatic 30-mile drive perched 600 feet above the shoreline, Skyline Parkway offers sweeping autumnal views. Take in panoramic vistas of Lake Superior, the bustling harbor and Twin Ports, the famed Hawk Ridge on Seven Bridges Road, picturesque rock canyons, and tumbling streams.
By Train: Journey Through Fall Colors

Experience the magic of autumn by rail! Ride the North Shore Scenic Railroad and take in the spectacular autumn colors on their Two Harbors Fall Colors Tour. This six-hour day trip journeys along the North Shore with a two-hour stop for lunch and exploration in Two Harbors, offering a unique and memorable perspective of the changing leaves.
By Water: See the Colors from the Lake
Experience autumn’s beauty from the refreshing vantage point of Lake Superior! Check out Vista Fleet’s special fall tours, including Coffee and Colors, Lunch & Leaves, and the Harvest Dinner Cruise. (Note that the coffee and lunch tours will typically explore the St. Louis River system and surrounding foliage, offering unique views of the colorful riverbanks, rather than going under the aerial lift bridge into the open lake.)
