We’re bringing music to The Yard! The Gemstones are Duluth’s funktastic soul/rock band hitting you hard in the groove bone – the kind of band your mom wishes she grew up listening to. Whether it be Courtney Ellian’s smooth and sultry vocals or keys playing, Manny Eisele loving the low-end on bass/vocals, Josh Nickila’s vintage sound on guitar/vocals, or Ian Hopp’s “madman on funkahol” drumming/vocals; this is a powerhouse of soundscapes and all-around funk/rock sex-suasion – musically. If the weather gets bad we’ll move the music indoors! No Cover | All Ages | Family Friendly
Music’s heading out to The Yard (weather permitting), so grab a drink, find a spot, and settle in! Socktopus is a 5-piece band dishing-out electrifying shows that leave you blissfully unaware of the laundry you left in the dryer. Fractalizing electro-pop-hip-hop, the Socktopus sound spans genres, served with heaps of our homemade secret sauce. Between Howls (Duluth, MN) are violinist Ren Howl & guitarist Nick Howl. The husband & wife duo’s unique blend of vocal harmonies, thoughtful lyrics and virtuosic instrumental arrangements have been drawing in audiences across the US since 2018. If the weather doesn’t cooperate, we’ll slide things indoors! No Cover | All Ages | Family Friendly
Experience TTT’s unique model of performing in the round, with the lights on, minimal sets, and live music. The result is a performance that engages the imagination of our audiences. Through this dynamic exchange, artists and audiences breathe new life into theater together, reminding us that theater is essential to all of our lives. Directed by Caitlin Lowans. Music Direction by Isabella Dawis. Featuring Maje Adams, Sasha Andreev, Pedro R. Bayón, Phinehas Bynum, Julia Diaz, Suzie Juul, and Norah Long. A waitress finds a love note from a mysterious customer and begins a letter-writing romance. Little does she know the object of her growing love is an aging immigrant wine grower. Fearing rejection, he sends her another man’s photograph. This beautiful story marks the revival of TTT’s second-ever musical, asking who deserves love and how we come to understand each other. Free show, donations encouraged.
Duluth Sister Cities is sponsoring a free showing of the Oscar award-winning film, Mr. Nobody vs. Putin at Zeitgeist Theater on Wednesday, April 29 at 6:30pm. Russian teacher, Pavel “Pasha” Talankin, documents the systematic indoctrination of his students after Russia declared war with Ukraine. This powerful film explores the complexities of modern geopolitics through a deeply human lens. Following the screening, DSCI board member JP Gresh — who has served as a military attaché in both Ukraine and Russia — will lead a discussion on cultural dynamics in Russia and the long-term impact of Russia’s war on Ukraine. Admission is free and all are welcome.
Happy Homegrown! Each year from April 26 to May 3, the Zenith City transforms into an eight-day, 172-band musical marathon. Join local musician and Steering Committee member Famous Kaylee for an insider’s guide to navigating Duluth’s favorite local holiday — from snagging your weeklong wristband and mastering Western Wednesday to catching sets at Amsoil Arena and finding your new favorite band in a Lincoln Park taproom.
