A Superior Spooky Season: Halloween Haunts in Duluth, Minnesota

Just as the fog from Lake Superior creeps into the harbor, spooky season settles into Duluth come October, with events for everyone looking to celebrate fall and Halloween.

For the Kids

  • The Great Pumpkin Train – Hop aboard the North Shore Scenic Railroad for a journey up the shore to a pumpkin patch, where riders can pick out their own pumpkin.
  • Boo at the Zoo” at Lake Superior Zoo – This family friendly event features trick-or-treating stations, special Halloween-themed animal treats, food trucks, games and more.
  • Scarium at the Aquarium – Guests can trick-or-treat among exhibits at the spookily decorated Great Lakes Aquarium and take part in crafts, projects and games. (Pre-registration required.)

For History Buffs (and Amateur Ghost Hunters)

  • St. Louis County Depot Haunted History Tours – With 130 years of history, The Depot has its fair share of ghost stories. A guide will lead visitors through the historic train depot while sharing spooky legends and experiences.
  • Duluth Ghost Tours – Stroll with a guide along the Lakewalk and pier in Canal Park to learn about Duluth’s culture, history, shipwrecks, tragedies, hauntings, lore and more.

For Thrill Seekers (If You Dare!)

  • William A. Irvin Haunted Ship Tours – During the month of October, the William A. Irvin ore ship stationed in the Duluth harbor transforms into a haunted vessel, revealing its “true identity.” The self-guided tour starts in the engine room and weaves you through the dark, eerie hallways. You’ll get the feeling that you’re not alone, because you won’t be. The tour features several new spaces this year, including a “choose your own adventure” section and a Victorian parlor and library complete with thunderstorms. Open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays in October – plus MEA weekend and Halloween.

For Leaf Peepers

Before or after events, cozy up with a beverage in Duluth, either around a patio fire at one of many breweries, cideries or distilleries, or inside at a charming restaurant or coffee shop. October is also a great time to check out a performance or exhibit at one of Duluth’s theaters and museums.
