Flannel Fest – The Hibernation Celebration! We’re diving deep into the fabric of “Flannel” again this year, celebrating everything from Grunge to Country to Americana and all the meaningful moments in-between, flannels have kept us comfortable in their warm embrace. Lydia Boyum & Ryan Lane are a singer/songwriter duo from Duluth, MN. Drawing from folk, Americana, and indie genres, they blend poetic and witty lyrics with catchy melodies in their original songs. Their music is influenced by artists such as Leonard Cohen, Jason Isbell, Kris Kristofferson, and Colbie Caillat. Lydia’s debut EP, “Paradise Lost,” as well as Ryan’s debut album, “Aspiring Romantic,” can be found on all streaming platforms.
Over the course of his long and illustrious musical career sprouting from the same teal backwater as Bob Dylan on northern Minnesota’s Iron Range, Rich Mattson came up learning songs from John Denver to Van Halen with a little Elvis Costello and Neil Young tossed into the mix. Add in some heaping handfuls of U2, the Replacements, and CCR and blend until the ingredients come splattering in bits and pieces and you have around 500 tunes and this fella’s discography. Now residing in Sparta MN with his life and love partner Germaine Gemberling, the two have been writing, recording, and performing (among other things) together since 2010. The latest incarnation of the Northstars (with longtime drummer and cohort Keely Lane and bassist Kyle Westrick) features Duluth’s Dan Anderson on keys. Peat Boggs is an eclectic quartet that plays an organic blend of groove, jazz, and twisted folk, shifting easily from smooth melodies to hints of doom and surf rock. Cole Webster shapes the band’s sound with gritty, expressive guitar. Ben Wagener holds down the low end with melodic, wigglin’ bass lines. Chris Shea drives the groove on drums and all things rhythm. Charlie French delivers murky yet reflective lyricism that weaves seamlessly through the band’s lush arrangements. Secret weapon Cavan Denning joins in on sweet, slippery pedal steel. Marlena Boedigheimer, a tenor saxophonist from Duluth, Minnesota, began playing at 14, inspired by Pete Rock & CL Smooth’s “T.R.O.Y.” Her passion for jazz grew through mentorship and high school jazz band participation. The members of Sometime, Maybe have been playing music in Duluth for over 20 years, but it wasn’t till 2023 that the four of them began playing together. A cumulative of their various backgrounds, tastes, and experiences, they make music that soothes your soul, ruffles your feathers, and gets stuck in your head. With a mix of covers and originals, they’re keeping it moody, groovy, and oh just right. With Erick holding court on the bass, teaching us lessons and keeping it right, and Luke doing mean things to the drums, keeping it tight – that leaves room for Mary to wow with soaring melodies and crushing keys, whilst Asa croons and croaks, tells bad jokes, and strums the ol’ git-fiddle. They love hanging out, making music, getting creative, and maybe playing a show or two — and whatever you think their music is, that’s exactly what it is.
