The Northland Vietnam Veterans Association is inviting veterans, veteran’s families, and the public to participate in honoring the area men and women who have given the ultimate sacrifice in the service of our great nation. The ceremony will be held on Traditional Memorial Day (Saturday, May 30th, 2026) at 6 PM, at the Northland Vietnam Veterans Memorial on the Lakewalk. The Northland Vietnam Veterans Association has been honoring our 137 northland brothers (with the addition of Pfc. Rory T. Haran, US Marine Corps, of Proctor in 2025), whose names are inscribed on the Wall, since the dedication of the Memorial on Memorial Day 1992. Presiding Officer of the ceremony is Dwight Nelson (U.S. Navy), Past President of the Northland Vietnam Veterans Association and designer of the Northland Vietnam Veterans Memorial. After your time on the Trail, celebrate with us at one of four epic birthday parties hosted by local businesses. You bring the stories and we’ll bring the cake! “Frame It” is a new exhibition that combines writing and art. Come to the opening reception where there will be over 30 local artist vendors! An open mic will start at 3:00pm. Listen as creatives share their work or take to the stage yourself! Free to attend. Celebrate writing and local artists in the City of Superior at the Douglas County Historical Society on May 3, 2026 from 2:00-6:00 pm. The exhibition runs through May, and art will be hanging in the Douglas County Historical Society all month.
Duluth Sister Cities is sponsoring a free showing of the Oscar award-winning film, Mr. Nobody vs. Putin at Zeitgeist Theater on Wednesday, April 29 at 6:30pm. Russian teacher, Pavel “Pasha” Talankin, documents the systematic indoctrination of his students after Russia declared war with Ukraine. This powerful film explores the complexities of modern geopolitics through a deeply human lens. Following the screening, DSCI board member JP Gresh — who has served as a military attaché in both Ukraine and Russia — will lead a discussion on cultural dynamics in Russia and the long-term impact of Russia’s war on Ukraine. Admission is free and all are welcome.

Building Bridges: Learning from Duluth’s Experiences in Pursuing Community Based Diplomacy Thursday, April 23rd, 6PM MW Alworth Hall, 195 Community Engagement in U.S.-Russian Relations from the Cold War to Today. Dr. Doug Nord will discuss his new book that examines Duluth’s conduct of sister-city diplomacy over the past four decades, exploring how community engagement in international affairs was initiated and conducted and the lessons that can be learned from Duluth’s experience. Special attention will be paid to the linkages between Duluth and Petrozavodsk, Russia.
