This year for National Volunteer Week, Head of the Lakes United Way is teaming up with our non-profit partners in the Twin Ports and on the Northshore to celebrate current volunteers and spark volun-curiousity for those looking to give back to their community. We are hosting two Volun-Cheers events that will feature door prizes, food, music and a chance to mingle with volunteers, volunteer coordinators, leaders from local non-profit organizations, sponsors and participating businesses.
Presented by the Executive Director of the Carlton County Historical Society, who wrote this amazing book after finding a very special collection of letters in their archives. After losing both his sons in combat during World War II, Edward Kennedy did something positive with his grief. He took a request from his employer, the Northwest Paper Company of Cloquet, Minnesota, to collect names and addresses of their employees in military service and turned it into a letter-writing mission. Kennedy wrote newsy, upbeat four-page letters every two weeks from July 1943 to the end of the war: 57 letters in all. His letters talked about the weather, sports, hunting and fishing, and local events. Those receiving the letters wrote back with their news, which Kennedy then shared with the group. These letters served as a lifeline for men and women adapting to war-time assignments far from home. They weathered the war because…

The Scientists and Staff of UMD’s Large Lakes Observatory (LLO) invite the community to board and tour the Blue Heron Research Vessel. Science on Deck events are free and open to the public from 11 am–3 pm. Enjoy guided tours of the research vessel from the crew, interact with graduate students working on freshwater research, and explore engaging displays. The science presentation at 1:30 pm on June 26 will be from our Large Lakes Observatory’s Director, Dr. Catherine O’Reilly, titled: “Underwater Soundscapes.” The R/V Blue Heron will tie-up at the Pier B Resort for this event, 800 W.
