There will be free face painting, a photo booth, and costume contests! This family-friendly market is free to attend and open to the public. This event is drug and alcohol free.
Opening Artist Reception for Sanctuary by Maya Washington
AICHO’s Dr. Robert Powless Cultural Center 212 W. 2nd Street, Duluth, MN, United StatesThe American Indian Community Housing Organization (AICHO) will host the opening artist reception for Sanctuary by multi-disciplinary artist Maya Washington. Sanctuary is a meditation on resilience, safety, and community. Washington’s reflection on the subtlety of daily life before, during, and after 2020, documents the time span as witness amidst personal and universal upheaval. This reception will welcome Washington and her photography and paintings into our newly renovated art space. Join us in celebrating Maya Washington and listen to her speak about her art exhibition. Sanctuary will run starting on June 10, 2024 and ending on August 30, 2024. Sanctuary will be the first art exhibit in AICHO’s newly renovated gallery space. Indigenous Writer Series: Gwen Westerman and Linda LeGarde Grover
AICHO’s Dr. Robert Powless Cultural Center 212 W. 2nd Street, Duluth, MN, United StatesAICHO’s Indigenous Writer Series continues with the next event featuring Minnesota Poet Laureate Gwen Westerman and Linda LeGarde Grover. This event will take place on May 18, 2024 between 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Dr. Robert Powless Cultural Center at 212 West 2nd Street, Duluth, MN. In their session, Westerman and LeGarde Grover will each talk about their books, read an excerpt, participate in a Q&A segment, and sign books. Parking for the event is free and is located in the parking lot across from the gallery.
Zaagi’idiwin Tour 2024
AICHO’s Dr. Robert Powless Cultural Center 212 W. 2nd Street, Duluth, MN, United StatesAICHO will host its first-ever love-themed market, the Zaagi’idiwin Tour 2024. Community members can take loved ones on a stroll through the market where they can purchase creative and original love-themed art prints, jewelry, sweets, and more. This pop-up market event is intended to make Valentine's Day gift shopping less stressful and more meaningful. Community members can connect with and support 20 Indigenous and BIPOC entrepreneurs. This market will center Indigenous and BIPOC entrepreneurs, following AICHO's mission to create spaces and opportunities for these creators. In addition to early Valentine’s Day shopping, community members can enjoy other activities such as live music by two Indigenous musicians, a photo booth, a free Valentine gift basket drawing, and face painting. The event is funded by the First Peoples Fund.
Mazinibii’igewininiwag: Two Woodland Artists, Opening Reception
AICHO’s Dr. Robert Powless Cultural Center 212 W. 2nd Street, Duluth, MN, United StatesAICHO Galleries is honored to bring together Gordon Coons (Lac Courte Oreilles) and Steven StandingCloud (Red Lake) in the group art exhibition “Mazinibii’igewininiwag: Two Woodland Artists.” This art exhibition runs between November 6 - December 29, 2023 (M-F 10am - 5pm). Explore the power of connection to nature, culture, spirituality, and Ojibwe realities (past and present) through Coons and StandingCloud’s strikingly bold and meaningful Anishinaabeg Woodland symbolic imagery. Gordon Coons is an enrolled member of the Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe and Ottawa and Potawatomi from Michigan from his mother’s side. Gordon is a self-taught painter, printmaker, and fumage artist. He paints in the Ojibwa Woodland style and creates smoke art by burning cedar.
