Edmund Fitzgerald Memorial Beacon Lighting

This year marks both the 50th anniversary of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald and the 40th anniversary of Split Rock Lighthouse’s annual memorial beacon lighting. Throughout the day, guests can explore the lighthouse, fog signal building, and visitor center. Guided tours and a brief film will be available that share the story of the Edmund Fitzgerald and her final voyage.

Science on Deck

Welcome Aboard UMD Large Lakes Observatory’s R/V Blue Heron! Every summer, the Large Lakes Observatory hosts Science on Deck events, offering free public tours and presentations on the research vessel (R/V) Blue Heron. The Blue Heron is part of the University National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS), and is chartered by research scientists to explore the Great Lakes. Throughout the summer, the Blue Heron will dock at Pier B Resort, extend the gangway, and invite the community to meet the crew, scientists and students. Presentations begin at 1:30pm on the back deck with our featured speakers. Science on Deck 2025 Dates Free and open to the public from 11am – 3pm!
