This year the Duluth Women of Today are joining forces with the Veterans Memorial Hall in sponsoring our 2025 Veterans Day Ceremonies. This year marks the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army, the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Marine Corps. The event will take place on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, in the Great Hall of the DEPOT (506 W. Michigan St). The program will begin promptly at 11 AM and will include an array of patriotic music provided by the Spirit Valley Drum & Bugle Corps., the Superior Senior High School Choir, bag piper Kerry Welch and the National Anthem will be sung by Aalyiah Gebhardt. The guest speaker will be Bob Stephens, 10-year U.S. Navy Veteran, and regular member of the American Legion Hall Post #71. Now, in 2025, composer/arranger Russ Kaplan has taken this “global mixtape” as inspiration for a unique concert that highlights our shared humanity. With an 8-piece ensemble comprised of only the most universal instruments – voices and percussion – Kaplan and his musicians present stirring and innovative new arrangements of highlights from the Golden Record, as well as original pieces created with multicultural collaborators. The Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra’s Masterworks 2 offers an evening of music, written purely for the enjoyment of beauty, juxtaposed with Haydn’s (originally titled) Mass for Troubled Times. Anna Clyne’s Restless Oceans presents a pastoral of the natural world, including lyrical melodies as well as tempestuous scenes. The second of Brahms’ two serenades is truly music for music’s sake — a tuneful stroll in the concert hall. Paired with these two works, The Lord Nelson Mass was written for the name day of Princess Esterházy, the wife of Haydn’s patron. The Mass honors Lord Admiral Horatio Nelson’s victory over Napoleon at Aboukir, just off the coast of North Africa at Alexandria in 1798, and showcases powerhouse guest soloists Sarah Lawrence, Sadie Cheslak, Joshua Kohl, and Andrew Wilkowske alongside the DSSO Chorus.
