This Art Night Out is a one-of-a-kind celebration of communication: a postcard-writing party! Enjoy free snacks and drinks, spend a social evening in the galleries, hear an artist talk with artist duo Cody Paulson and Stephen Pestalozzi, and sit down to draft and send postcards, plucked right off the gallery walls, to your friends and loved ones. Pay what you can, suggested $0-$50. Bring your mailing addresses — all other writing and mailing supplies are included in the exhibition. Funding for this program provided by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council.
Our Siiviis Gallery summer exhibition, North Shore Folklore, is an exploration of the mysterious, unknown and intriguing in and around the North Shore. Do you know any tall tales of the Great Lakes, heard or invented; any inexplicable occurrences? Can you describe something intriguing or secret about the deep places in the world? How would you depict magic associated with being in or near big water? Please join us at our opening reception on Saturday, July 11, 2026 from 2:00-5:00p. In the early 1970s, teenagers with disabilities faced a future shaped by isolation, discrimination and institutionalization. Camp Jened, a ramshackle camp “for the handicapped” in the Catskills, exploded those confines. Jened was their freewheeling Utopia, a place with summertime sports, smoking and makeout sessions awaiting everyone, and campers felt fulfilled as human beings. Their bonds endured as they migrated West to Berkeley, California — a promised land for a growing and diverse disability community — where friends from Camp Jened realized that disruption and unity might secure life-changing accessibility for millions. Co-directed by Emmy®-winning filmmaker Nicole Newnham and film mixer and former camper Jim LeBrecht, this joyous and exuberant documentary arrives the same year as the 30th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, at a time when the country’s largest minority group still battles daily for the freedom to exist. A young girl, Chihiro, becomes trapped in a strange new world of spirits. When her parents undergo a mysterious transformation, she must call upon the courage she never knew she had to free her family. This film is presented in collaboration with Duluth Sister Cities as part of an initiative to showcase international films. Founded in 1986, Duluth Sister Cities is celebrating its 40th year anniversary this year. The organization’s mission is: “With person to person diplomacy and mutual respect, Duluth Sister Cities International promotes global understanding through cultural, economic, educational, and artistic endeavors.”
