MOUNTAIN BIKING TRAIL GUIDE

By Ansel Schimpff, Executive Director of Cyclists of Gitchee Gumee Shores (COGGS)

Duluth is home to over 110 miles of purpose-built, mountain bike-optimized multi-use trails, with the 42-mile Duluth Traverse connecting the city from end to end. There are five main trail centers to choose from, with each trail network having a unique character and style. From the fast, flowing ribbons of dirt through Mission Creek and Lester Park, to the technical rock slabs and jumps of Piedmont and the gravity-fed tracks of Spirit Mountain, Duluth is truly a mountain bike destination for all.

TRAILS

Beginner

Mission Creek boasts 23 miles of rollers, berms, and flow. Base your adventure at the recently rebuilt Chambers Grove Park and explore the beautiful views of the St. Louis River and the Mission Creek valley. Chambers Grove has ample parking, modern park amenities and a great playground. Pack a picnic, bring the family, and make a day of it.

Intermediate

With 15 miles of trails, there is plenty to explore in Hartley Park. Riders looking for a longer ride can follow the Duluth Traverse east towards Lester Park, or west through the UMD campus, Chester Park and St. Scholastica. Hartley has a great mix of old school hand-built singletrack and smoother machine-built flow trail. The newly rebuilt Pines Loop is the perfect trail for beginner riders and kids with sweeping berms and optional skills features. Visiting without your bike? Hartley Nature center has a fleet of rental bikes available. Families riding with young kids should be sure to check out the playscape and Hartley Pond just beyond the Nature Center.

Advanced

The Full Traverse is a true Duluth epic ride. Riding a 42 mile, point to point mountain bike trail, all within the city limits is an experience unique to Duluth. Starting at Lester Park or Chambers Grove, riders get a sample of all five of Duluth’s ride centers and incredible view of the city only accessible by trail. A quick stop for lunch in Lincoln Park makes for a great day on the bike. View the full route on Trailforks.
