Faces of Duluth: Harley D. Huskie

Faces of Duluth tells the stories of the people behind Duluth’s iconic attractions, hidden gems and everything in between. Faces of Duluth provides the locals’ tips and tricks for seeing all the city has to offer.

This “Face” of Duluth is a furry one, with a long snout, black nose and sky-blue eyes. Yes, we’re talking with Harley D. Huskie, the beloved mascot of the Duluth Huskies baseball team!

As the Huskies celebrate 20 years as a team in 2023, we sat down with Harley to talk about his favorite memories, his patented dance moves, what he and his fellow dogs like to do in Duluth and tips for visitors who come to Wade Stadium to root for the home team.

This year is the team’s 20th season! When did you join the team? What have been some highlights over the years?

I was born in 2005 and joined the team the following season. Some of my favorite memories have been our three trips to the Northwoods League World Series. My other favorite thing is when we get to do the Harley race!

How did you get your name?

It was a naming contest back in the 2005/2006 offseason. They were stuck between Harley D. Huskie or Henry T. Hound. I am very glad they decided on Harley!

What is your favorite part of game day?

Getting the crowd involved! Interacting with fans of all ages is the best part for sure.

How do you get the crowd hyped up during games?

My patented move is the Harley Shake. Otherwise, high fives and clapping along to music usually does the trick!

What is your favorite annual promotion?

I would have to say St. Luke’s night because we always do a specialty jersey and we get to interact with the great people who work for and with St. Luke’s!

Duluth loves its dogs. What do dogs like you love about Duluth?

Being a Husky, I personally love the winters in Duluth. I play in the snow all day during the offseason. During the summer when I’m not at the Wade, I’m typically on the Lakewalk or down at Park Point frolicking on the banks of Lake Superior.

What kind of community events do you get to be a part of?

Our biggest community event this season was the summer reading program with the Duluth and Cloquet public libraries. It is always fun to help provide a space for kids to learn and grow!

Why should visitors plan to go to a Huskies game during their time in Duluth? Any tips or tricks for Game Day?

I always recommend stopping by Bent Paddle on the way into a game! But the biggest tip would be to bring clothing for all weather – you never know what Duluth weather can bring! Once you get here, make sure to try the world-famous Harley’s Nachos, with pulled pork from Howard’s Que!
