Faces of Duluth: Hannah Rey (they/she)

Faces of Duluth tells the stories of the people behind Duluth’s iconic attractions, hidden gems and everything in between. Traveling to Duluth? Learn the locals’ tips and tricks for seeing all the city has to offer.

When it comes to local artistic talent, Duluth has no shortage. Musician Hannah Rey has seen first-hand the difference music and community can make in people’s lives. We caught up with them to hear more about what inspires their music and fuels their passion.

What is your Duluth story?

I grew up in the woods near Two Harbors and attended North Shore Elementary and Two Harbors High. I remember seeing Duluth’s skyline from Hwy 61 and imagining having an apartment in the big city. Now I’m living the dream in the Endion neighborhood. Off-street parking, baby!

We know you have a passion for music and the arts. Can you tell us a little about your music?

When asked about the type of music I play, I like to say it’s a little bit of something for everyone. I have a collection of original material ranging from sweet love songs to angry belters. I also love my curated and ever-changing collection of cover songs. It fuels my passion to play these songs in my special way and continues to guide me towards my true voice.

How has your music become a tool in fostering positive change and inspiration in the Duluth community?

I think the best example of this was the 2020 lockdown. Unable to play at my usual haunts, I dove into Facebook livestreaming – usually an hour of songs and connecting with folks through comments. It was challenging and totally weird logging on and having all this great energy and connection, then logging off and going back to being alone in my silent living room. But it was also an incredible tool during that isolating time. Years later, I still hear from folks who tuned in for the livestreams thanking me for them. I’m proud of myself for embracing the intense feelings of that time and doing the best thing I could do – sharing songs and holding space for our collective grief.

What do you enjoy most about being a part of the music community in Duluth?

In recent years I’ve seen so much more diversity in our community and it truly lights me up. There’s so many rad and wildly talented folks making music in the area. I love that whatever you’re into, you can find a local show you’ll love. Check out On The Record for a beautiful local guide on events!

When you’re not playing music, how else do you spend your time?

I recently discovered a love for collage. I find it beneficial to make art in forms other than writing lyrics and music. It helps shake off some of the pressure and perfectionism that sometimes holds me back from creating. I also practice daily yoga at home, and often through Svälja, a local studio that honors the cultures we borrow from in our practice and offers sliding scale pricing and trauma informed instruction.

You are also an advocate for the LGBTQ+ community in Duluth. What drives your passion?

Representation and community are so important. Being a marginalized person can feel really isolating. I’ve experienced that myself so that’s why I make a point to speak openly about my experiences. If I can help one person feel less alone, I feel really good about that.

What are some of your favorite things to do with guests from out of town?

Visiting the lake, of course! I have my favorite spots for all seasons. I love taking family and friends to places like Ursa Minor in the Lincoln Park Craft District or Dunn Bros on London Rd. I’m looking forward to taking my mom to the fabulous new Falastin in Lakeside when she next visits.

How can people find out about your upcoming shows?

I have a “Gig List” pinned to the top of my Facebook page at facebook.com/hannahreygun. Hope to see you out there!
