- St. Louis County Historical Society: A grand 1892 French Renaissance depot in Downtown Duluth houses free permanent exhibits dedicated to Lake Superior Ojibwe history, regional timber industries, and generations of military service.
- Lake Superior Railroad Museum: Home to iconic steam locomotives and vintage railcars, where you can also board the North Shore Scenic Railroad during summer and fall. Located in the historic St. Louis County Depot, this is one of the largest and most respected railway museums in the country.

- Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum: This free museum preserves historical manuscripts in the categories of literature, science, religion, political history, exploration, music, and art. One of only 4 locations in the country, the entire collection protects more than a million historical documents.
