A Northland tradition since 1977, Grandma’s Marathon is one of Duluth’s most iconic events. What started as a modest race with just a few hundred runners has grown into a weekend-long celebration of athleticism, community, and Lake Superior spirit. Departure: 5:45 AM from the St. Louis County Depot
Return: 9:00 AM to Duluth

Experience: The North Shore Scenic Railroad’s spectator train departs early from The St. Louis County Depot, arriving at the starting line with plenty of time to catch your favorite runner. As the race begins, the train travels alongside the route, keeping pace with the leaders during the first few miles before looping back to Duluth. You’ll return just in time to catch the first marathoners crossing the finish line in Canal Park. The Grandma’s Marathon Viewer ticket includes breakfast, snacks, a Bloody Mary or mimosa bar, and a fun Grandma’s Marathon souvenir pack — it’s a first-class way to experience the excitement!

Grandma’s Marathon is more than a race; it’s a community-powered celebration that thrives thanks to the dedication of nearly 5,000 volunteers each year. From managing water stations to guiding runners and cheering them on, volunteers are the heartbeat of this event.

Volunteering offers a unique opportunity to be part of a world-class event while contributing to the vibrant spirit of Duluth. Whether you’re a local resident or visiting for the weekend, there’s a role for everyone. Volunteers receive:

  • An official Grandma’s Marathon volunteer T-shirt.
  • Two drink tickets redeemable on race day at Bayfront Festival Park.
  • A pair of Fitsoks.
  • An invitation to the Volunteer Appreciation Party held the week after the race.
  • Exclusive coupons to local businesses.
  • The gratitude of over 20,000 runners and spectators.

Volunteering is even more enjoyable with friends, family, or colleagues. Groups of 15 or more volunteers are entered into a drawing for one of three $1,000 “Grandma’s Marathon Golden Tickets,” which can be donated to a non-profit organization of the group’s choice. To register your group or learn more, contact Program Director Alivia Nelson.
