A Northland tradition since 1977, Grandma’s Marathon is one of Duluth’s signature events, drawing more than 20,000 runners from around the world each June. This iconic race winds along the breathtaking shores of Lake Superior before finishing in Duluth’s energetic Canal Park, fueled by thousands of cheering spectators. Over the years, the event has grown to include the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon, the William A. Irvin 5K, the Great Grandma’s Challenge, and kid-friendly Whipper Snapper Races. Grandma’s Marathon weekend, June 19–21, 2025, is the unofficial kickoff to summer in Duluth — welcoming athletes and fans for a full celebration of running, community spirit, and Lake Superior views.
