    It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Santa is excited to return to Split Rock Lighthouse this holiday season! Stop by and visit with Santa on Saturday, December 13, and Sunday, December 14, from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. Children ages 5–17 receive free admission both days. Adults can also explore the lighthouse grounds for free by bringing a donation for the Silver Bay Veterans Home. And don’t forget to snap a photo with Santa during your visit!

    Join author Travis Zimmerman and illustrator Sam Zimmerman for a signing of their children's book How the Birds Got Their Songs. How the Birds Got Their Songs is the winner of the Heartland Booksellers Award in the children's picture book category and was honored at the Heartland Fall Forum on October 14, 2025 in Indianapolis. This treasured story, handed down through author Travis Zimmerman's family, features traditional knowledge from the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. Grand Portage descendant Sam Zimmerman's vibrant illustrations showcase his stylized artistry and deep appreciation for feathered creatures. Marcus Ammesmaki's retelling in Ojibwemowin brings the story full circle, encouraging language learners to explore this age-old depiction of our natural world — and inviting all readers to cherish the gift of birdsong.

  • Christmas at the Lighthouse

    Christmas at the Lighthouse is a guided experience for guests to explore the restored keeper’s house while learning about how the families lived at the station during the winter and the holiday season in the 1930s. Guests also have the opportunity to create a vintage, homemade ornament to take home or decorate the tree in the house.

  • Edmund Fitzgerald Memorial Beacon Lighting

    This year marks both the 50th anniversary of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald and the 40th anniversary of Split Rock Lighthouse’s annual memorial beacon lighting. Throughout the day, guests can explore the lighthouse, fog signal building, and visitor center. Guided tours and a brief film will be available that share the story of the Edmund Fitzgerald and her final voyage.

All of her art (and poetry) is deeply rooted in our connection to the Earth and its creatures. This connection is what binds us as inhabitants of an increasingly fragile planet. The exhibit, North Shore Life represents work created since moving to the North Shore from the Twin Cities seventeen years ago!

From fishing villages and logging sites to lighthouses, parks, and roadside attractions, Alanen highlights the people and places that shaped one of the Midwest’s most beloved byways.
