“Mail Is What They Want Most:” The WWII Letters of Edward A. Kennedy
Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center 305 E 2nd St., Superior, MN, United StatesPresented by the Executive Director of the Carlton County Historical Society, who wrote this amazing book after finding a very special collection of letters in their archives. After losing both his sons in combat during World War II, Edward Kennedy did something positive with his grief. He took a request from his employer, the Northwest Paper Company of Cloquet, Minnesota, to collect names and addresses of their employees in military service and turned it into a letter-writing mission. Kennedy wrote newsy, upbeat four-page letters every two weeks from July 1943 to the end of the war: 57 letters in all. His letters talked about the weather, sports, hunting and fishing, and local events. Those receiving the letters wrote back with their news, which Kennedy then shared with the group. These letters served as a lifeline for men and women adapting to war-time assignments far from home. They weathered the war because...

Homefront: Childhood Memories of WWII author reading
Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center 305 E 2nd St., Superior, MN, United StatesWhen Peggy Trojan was seventy-seven years old, she took a poetry class for seniors. One assignment was “A day I will never forget." She wrote about the day when World War II ended, and it became her first published poem. Now ninety-three years old, she has continued to write poetry and is the award-winning author of two full collections and eight chapbooks. She will share her personal memories of World War II as an eight-to-twelve-year-old child in Brule, Wisconsin, and will read poetry from her first chapbook, Homefront. The Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center welcomes local author Peggy Trojan to speak on Thursday, March 12th, from 6:30-7:30 PM. The talk is part of the Bong museum’s “Voices of Service & History” monthly speaker program. On the second Thursday of each month, the museum welcomes expert speakers on a wide variety of military- and history-related topics.

Remembering the Edmund Fitzgerald

Bong Veterans Historical Center 305 E 2nd St., Superior, MN, United StatesIn honor of the 50th anniversary of the tragic sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald, the Richard I Bong Veterans Historical Center will host a special evening program on Thursday November 13th featuring Great Lakes historian Ryan Mihalak and longtime Northland weatherman Dave Anderson. Great Lakes historian Ryan Mihalak will recount the story of the ship’s final voyage. Veteran meteorologist Dave Anderson will provide expert commentary on the weather systems that converged to create one of the most powerful and destructive storms in Lake Superior’s history —conditions that doomed even the most seasoned sailors.

Bong Veterans Historical Center. $10 entry to our fundraiser AND the museum! This also includes (1) pour of wine, beer or soda of your choice. You will also receive samples from our local food and beverage vendors. We will also have local food and beverage vendors selling their delicious eats and drinks. Food trucks onsite as well. Local artists and small businesses selling their crafts and goods too. Our own Auxiliary members have been busy making wine and painting wine glasses to sell as well! The talented Todd Eckart will be joining us singing tunes everyone will enjoy! Superior K9 and Bearcat SWAT track onsite.
