DESCRIPTION:The St. Louis County Historical Society (SLCHS)\, under the guidance of the SLCHS American Indian Advisory Committee\, is proud to announce its annual Native American Heritage Day from 11AM to 3PM on Saturday\, November 22\, 2025\, at the St. Louis County Depot (506 W Michigan St\, Duluth\, MN 55802). The event is free and open to the public. \n“Native American Heritage Day is when we get to share our culture with the public\,” says Michele Beeksma\, SLCHS board member and American Indian Advisory Committee member. The goal\, according to Michelle\, “is to provide a common space where all can learn about and experience some of our local Native American heritage.” \nNative American Heritage Day gives families and folks who are just curious the opportunity to see\, hear\, and taste our regional Ojibwe culture. Kids can decorate a bandolier bag (or gashkibidaagan) or gather in the wigwam for story time. Enjoy a free lunch of frybread tacos and strawberry shortcake from The Food Stand\, and listen to a Ojibwe hand drummer performance. Also\, Dr. Arne Vainio and Ivy Vainio will share the art and stories of their CommUNITY blanket. \nFor the keynote of the event\, Marvin DeFoe and Hereditary Chief Robert Buffalo\, elders of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa\, will tell the story of the Sandy Lake Tragedy and how it led to the 1854 Treaty of LaPointe. That treaty ceded the land that Duluth stands on today. \nSLCHS will also unveil its newest traveling exhibit\, entitled Sovereign Nations: Discovering the Treaty Story of Minnesota’s Indigenous Peoples\, featuring the work of Ojibwe artist\, Sam Zimmerman. DESCRIPTION:This year the Duluth Women of Today are joining forces with the Veterans Memorial Hall in sponsoring our 2025 Veterans Day Ceremonies. This year marks the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army\, the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Marine Corps. The event will take place on Tuesday\, November 11\, 2025\, in the Great Hall of the DEPOT (506 W. Michigan St). The program will begin promptly at 11 AM and will include an array of patriotic music provided by the Spirit Valley Drum & Bugle Corps.\, the Superior Senior High School Choir\, bag piper Kerry Welch and the National Anthem will be sung by Aalyiah Gebhardt. The guest speaker will be Bob Stephens\, 10-year U.S. Navy Veteran\, and regular member of the American Legion Hall Post #71. The Duluth Honor Guard will post colors and will close out the Veterans Day ceremony with a Rifle Volley Salute and Taps. Afterward\, light lunch/refreshments provided by the Duluth Women of Today will be served in the Great Hall. \nFollowing the Veteran’s Day Ceremony lunch\, at 12:30 PM\, the PBS North Documentary\, “United in Service” will be shown with an introduction by director Keith Hopkins. \nThe entire event is free and open to the public! DESCRIPTION:Inclusion Mobile Museum\, Telling the Story of Civil Rights for a Forgotten Minority: People with Developmental Disabilities \nExhibit Opens October 1\, 2025\nOpen House: October 14\, 2025 from 5pm – 6pm \nIn observance of National Disability Employment Awareness Month\, the St. Louis County Historical Society (Society) is pleased to host the Minnesota Governor’s Council on Developmental Disabilities Inclusion Exhibit beginning October 1st on the second floor of the St. Louis County Depot (506 W Michigan St\, Duluth\, MN). The exhibit was developed in 2024 by the Minnesota Governor’s Council on Developmental Disabilities and is co-hosted by Udac\, a Duluth nonprofit established in 1969 to support individuals with disabilities. \nCelebrating the journey to increase the independence\, productivity\, self-determination\, integration\, and inclusion of Minnesotans with developmental disabilities and their families. From the early 1900s through today\, the display offers a greater understanding and perspective as individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities work towards greater inclusion. \nThe Society is grateful to Udac and the Governor’s Council on Developmental Disabilities to share these stories. According to Society executive director\, Wayne Gannaway\, “It’s important to record and remember how far we’ve come\, because progress is not permanent. It takes determined advocacy and commitment to maintain and advance.” \nExhibit topics include society’s perception and treatment of people with developmental disabilities for the past century; the pursuit of civil rights\, including better living conditions\, educational rights\, and employment opportunities; the importance of self-advocacy and advocacy for the underrepresented to enact lasting change; and the role of the courts\, the legislature\, and the executive branch that work to ensure the Constitutional rights of people with developmental disabilities. \nAn open house will be held in the Heritage Hall on the second floor of the St. Louis County Depot from 5PM to 6PM on Tuesday\, October 14\, 2025\, with speakers from Udac and Duluthians with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Guests are invited to view the exhibit and enjoy some light refreshments.

SUMMARY:Slovenian History\, Culture & Cuisine Festival
DESCRIPTION:A Slovenian History\, Culture and Cuisine Festival is scheduled for Saturday\, October 4\, 2025\, at the Depot in Duluth\, Minnesota. The Festival is co-sponsored by the Minnesota Branches of the Slovenian Union of America\, (SUA) and the St. Louis County Historical Society. \nThe Festival is dedicated to honor and preserve the Slovenian legacy\, heritage and culture. The program is designed to educate and expose people of Slovenian decent and the general public to the history\, culture and ethnic cuisine of this important European nation. A special invitation will be sent to local Grade School History teachers to have their class attend the Festival. \nThe Festival is divided into 2 sections\, the first section is free and open to the public. Starting at 10:00 a.m.\, the program will open with Miro Medved\, Honorary Consul\, Republic of Slovenia welcoming the attendees and making opening remarks\, followed by presentations by Norman Setnicker on the history of Slovenia\, Joe Valencic\, President of the SUA\, Slovenian Culture\, Marge Pryately\, Professor emeritus will display an exhibit titled\, “Farmers\, Miners\, and Refugees: Slovenian Immigration in Minnesota since 1855” and discuss the Slovenian exhibits located in the Depot Great Hall\, the program will close with a 2 hour concert by the internationally known Singing Slovenes. There will be a break in the program so people can view the exhibits in the Great Hall. Exhibits will include a showing of original cultural and mining paintings by Albin Zaverl\, an exhibit of items commemorating Bishop Baraga\, a Slovenian priest who ministered to thousands of Slovenians and the Ojibwe people. There will also be an exhibit highlighting Monsignor Joseph Buh. Additional exhibits are being planned. There will be a Genealogy Research Facilitator available to help people who are interested in researching their ancestry. \nA very special guest\, Suzana Češarek\, the Consul General for the Republic of Slovenia\, will also address the attendees. She will also hold consular hours so Slovenian citizens can apply for personal documents (passports and identity cards). To request an appointment\, contact sloconsulate.cleveland@gov.si to make an appointment no later than September 30\, 2025. \nThe second section of the Festival will start at 5:00 p.m. This section of the Festival will require the purchase of a $30 ticket and is limited to a maximum of 96 people. The focus will be on a Slovenian ethnic food buffet. There will be a roving Button Box musician playing ethnic songs. This time will also allow attendees to view the exhibits and socialize. The evening will close out with a presentation about the 100 Year SUA Convention to be held in 2026 here in Minnesota at the Fortune Bay Casino and Resort located on beautiful Lake Vermillion near Tower\, MN. DESCRIPTION:  \nFestival of History and Celebration of Veterans Memorial Hall: A Big Night for the St. Louis County Historical Society \nApril 8\, 2025\, 5PM-8:30PM\nSt. Louis County Depot in the Great Hall\n506 West Michigan Street\nDuluth\, MN 55802 \nThe Historical Society is proud to host the Twin Ports Festival of History and the re-opening of the restored Veterans Memorial Hall on Tuesday\, April 8\, 5:00 pm to 8:30 pm in the Great Hall at the Depot. The program and exhibits are free and open to the public. As part of the Twin Ports Festival of History\, the Historical Society is hosting “Heck of a New Deal: WPA Art of Northern Minnesota\,” presented by Brian and Sue Matuszak from 7:00 to 8:00 pm. The Duluth couple will tell stories and present photos of their road trip research of artists and the public artwork they created throughout the Arrowhead Region as part of the Federal Art Project\, a program sponsored by the Works Progress Administration. \nAs part of the festival\, the Historical Society will be displaying WPA and WPA-era artwork from its collections. Two interpretive stations in the Great Hall will be showcasing the work of the Historical Society’s American Indian Advisory Committee\, and Mining Industry Advisory Committee. \nFrom Setback to Comeback \nHistorical Society staff and volunteers spent months drying\, cleaning\, and repairing the Veterans Memorial Hall after a July 2024 water damage emergency. The exhibit\, restored to its former glory\, includes stories\, photos\, and artifacts of northeastern Minnesota veterans\, from the Civil War to the Global War on Terror. The Historical Society is proud to celebrate the reopening of Veterans Memorial Hall with a ribbon cutting at 6:30 pm on Thursday\, April 8\, on the third floor\, off the Great Hall. \nVeterans Memorial Hall was established in 1909 and is a program of the St. Louis County Historical Society. It is the mission of Veterans Memorial Hall to preserve\, collect\, and share veterans’ stories and artifacts and to educate the public about the history of veterans from northeastern Minnesota. \nThe Twin Ports History Festival showcases authors and historians of local\, regional\, national\, and international renown at various venues throughout the Twin Ports and in Two Harbors. The event is sponsored by the UMD Public History and Museum Studies Programs and multiple local heritage organizations. \nThe St. Louis County Historical Society is 501 c3 nonprofit that receives generous support from the people of St. Louis County through St. Louis County Board of Commissioners. The Historical Society partners with six affiliate local historical organizations throughout the county. It educates visitors and residents alike about county history through its exhibit galleries at the historic Depot\, open 7 days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.\, and through programs and traveling exhibits.
