SUMMARY:Photography & Art at the Rock: Featuring Ryan Cairl
DESCRIPTION:August at the Rock is about scale\, detail\, and the art of seeing the landscape in full. \nWe are proud to feature Ryan Cairl\, a landscape photographer whose work is inspired by a lifelong connection to the outdoors and a desire to capture the same sense of wonder found in the places we explore. \nRyan’s passion began early\, shaped by family trips to national parks and the iconic imagery found in postcard scenes — moments that sparked a goal to create images that hold that same beauty and feeling. \nWith a background in mechanical engineering\, Ryan brings a technical approach to his craft\, specializing in panoramic photography. By combining multiple images into a single\, highly detailed composition\, he creates photographs designed to be experienced at a larger scale — where every detail comes to life. \nHis work invites viewers to step closer\, take their time\, and fully immerse themselves in the landscape. \nRyan Cairl will be onsite to share more about her work on the following dates: \nAugust 22 | 10 am–6 pm\nAugust 29 | 10 am–6 pm

SUMMARY:Book Signing: "Remember the Main" by Meg Gorzycki
DESCRIPTION:Join author Meg Gorzycki for a signing of her new book\, Remember the Main: The Gay Bar that Started a Movement in the Northland. \nRemember the Main tells the story of a generation who found their cause and their community at Bob Jansens\, The Main Club. Their activism bridged the gap between the relatively closeted culture of the 1950s and the open advocacy of the 1990s and 2000s. Although the 1969 Stonewall riots are a well-known turning point in the fight for equality\, Remember the Main draws attention to a less dramatic but significant\, sustained regional effort. Weaving together oral history\, biography\, and social critique\, Meg Gorzycki chronicles the highs and lows of the local fight for human rights\, legal protection\, and health care for LGBTQ Americans. \nMeg Gorzycki is a historian\, educator\, community organizer\, and author. She brought Bob Jansen’s insights to her work in the San Francisco Bay Area\, where she developed LGBTQ support groups\, counseling services\, and curricula. She lives in Plymouth\, Minnesota. \nGet your copy of the book signed and meet Meg Gorzycki. Books will be available for purchase.

SUMMARY:Book Signing: "Following the Fish" by Michael Risku
DESCRIPTION:Join author Michael Risku for a signing of his new book\, Following the Fish: A History of Commercial Fishing Along Minnesota’s North Shore. \nThe first comprehensive history of commercial fishing and fishing settlements along Minnesota’s North Shore shares new conclusions regarding the fishery from 1650 to the present day. \nMichael Risku offers a full picture of this way of life: the geography of the lakeshore that determined where boats could land\, the types of fish that thrived in Lake Superior’s waters\, the earliest foot trails between Fond du Lac and Grand Portage\, the steamboats that served settlements before construction of the road. Risku details assorted watercraft and nets and hooklines\, describes the dangers of being out on the lake in all weather\, and explores the challenges of getting fish to market. He also prods the fishery’s collapse\, exploring overfishing\, other extractive industries (logging and mining)\, and invasive species. \nBorn into a commercial fishing family\, Michael Risku served in the US Navy\, holds a Coast Guard captain’s license\, and is a distinguished chair and professor emeritus from the University of the Incarnate Word. He lives in Two Harbors\, Minnesota. \nGet your copy of the book signed and meet Michael Risku. Books will be available for purchase.

SUMMARY:Photography & Art at the Rock: Lisa Webskowski
DESCRIPTION:July’s Photography and Art at the Rock flows with light\, color\, and the rhythm of water. \nWe are proud to feature Lisa Webskowski\, an acrylic painter whose work is deeply inspired by the landscapes and wildlife of Minnesota’s North Shore along Lake Superior. \nBoats\, shoreline\, wildlife\, and open water frequently appear in Lisa’s paintings — reflecting both the region’s cultural heritage and the enduring beauty of its natural environment. Across all subjects\, she follows one guiding principle: every piece contains water. \nIn her work\, water is not limited to lakes or rivers. It may be flowing\, still\, or frozen as snow. Even a moose deep in the forest or a winter bear is connected to the landscape through water. For Lisa\, water is both unifying element and quiet metaphor — a symbol of continuity\, transformation\, and resilience along the North Shore. \nHer background in graphic design and illustration informs her storytelling and composition\, while her lifelong connection to this place shapes her subject matter. Each painting invites viewers to step into a fleeting moment of light and presence within the landscape. \nLisa will be onsite to share more about her work on the following dates: \nFriday\, July 3 | 10 AM – 4 PM\nSaturday\, July 4 | 10 AM – 3 PM

SUMMARY:Photography & Art at the Rock: Stephanie Anderson
DESCRIPTION:For the month of May\, we are proud to feature Stephanie Anderson\, the artist behind The Hillside Creative\, whose work explores the harmony between architecture\, travel\, and the natural world. \nInspired by Minnesota’s North Shore and the Lake Superior region\, Stephanie’s hand-painted watercolor and gouache pieces capture the spaces where human ingenuity meets wild landscape. From beloved modes of travel to iconic structures set against open sky\, her work reflects both movement and stillness — and the beauty found where they meet. \nHer creative home is rooted in Minnesota’s rugged shoreline\, where land\, water\, and sky shape not only the view\, but the spirit. \nStep inside\, slow down\, and experience the North Shore through her eyes. \nOn display: May 1–31 \nStephanie Anderson will be onsite to share more about her work on the following date:\nSaturday\, May 16 | 10 am – 6 pm

SUMMARY:Photography & Art at the Rock: Aramis Wells
DESCRIPTION:Photography & Art at the Rock is a monthly exhibit at Split Rock Lighthouse highlighting local artists and photographers whose work celebrates the natural beauty of Minnesota’s North Shore — and beyond. \nFor the month of March\, we are proud to feature Aramis Wells\, a self-taught photographer from southern Minnesota. \nAramis’s work explores the space between earth and sky — from the intensity of fire scenes captured as a volunteer firefighter to the vastness of the stars rising over the shores of Lake Superior. His photography focuses primarily on landscapes and astrophotography\, with an emphasis on celestial events such as the northern lights\, eclipses\, and the Milky Way. \nHe enjoys pushing the limits of his gear\, whether freezing the motion of the International Space Station overhead or creating long exposures that allow stars to paint trails across the night sky. \nAramis’s creative home and greatest source of inspiration is Minnesota’s North Shore\, where dark skies reveal the universe and the power of Lake Superior offers healing and perspective. Through his work\, he hopes to inspire a sense of wonder and encourage others to venture into the wild\, look up\, slow down\, and feel deeply connected to something greater than themselves.
