SUMMARY:“Mail Is What They Want Most:" The WWII Letters of Edward A. Kennedy
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Executive Director of the Carlton County Historical Society\, who wrote this amazing book after finding a very special collection of letters in their archives. \nAfter losing both his sons in combat during World War II\, Edward Kennedy did something positive with his grief. He took a request from his employer\, the Northwest Paper Company of Cloquet\, Minnesota\, to collect names and addresses of their employees in military service and turned it into a letter-writing mission. \nKennedy wrote newsy\, upbeat four-page letters every two weeks from July 1943 to the end of the war: 57 letters in all. His letters talked about the weather\, sports\, hunting and fishing\, and local events. Those receiving the letters wrote back with their news\, which Kennedy then shared with the group. These letters served as a lifeline for men and women adapting to war-time assignments far from home. They weathered the war because they were connected to home and friends through Kennedy’s letters. \nToday\, Kennedy’s letters\, shared in the book “So Long and Best of Luck\,” provide us with a week-to-week glimpse of life in our area from 1943–45. The responses he received and summarized in his letters give an invaluable account of the war experiences of more than 300 men and women.

DESCRIPTION:When Peggy Trojan was seventy-seven years old\, she took a poetry class for seniors. One assignment was “A day I will never forget.” She wrote about the day when World War II ended\, and it became her first published poem. Now ninety-three years old\, she has continued to write poetry and is the award-winning author of two full collections and eight chapbooks. She will share her personal memories of World War II as an eight-to-twelve-year-old child in Brule\, Wisconsin\, and will read poetry from her first chapbook\, Homefront. \nThe Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center welcomes local author Peggy Trojan to speak on Thursday\, March 12th\, from 6:30-7:30 PM. The talk is part of the Bong museum’s “Voices of Service & History” monthly speaker program. On the second Thursday of each month\, the museum welcomes expert speakers on a wide variety of military- and history-related topics.

DESCRIPTION:In honor of the 50th anniversary of the tragic sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald\, the Richard I Bong Veterans Historical Center will host a special evening program on Thursday November 13th featuring Great Lakes historian Ryan Mihalak and longtime Northland weatherman Dave Anderson. Great Lakes historian Ryan Mihalak will recount the story of the ship’s final voyage. Veteran meteorologist Dave Anderson will provide expert commentary on the weather systems that converged to create one of the most powerful and destructive storms in Lake Superior’s history —conditions that doomed even the most seasoned sailors.

From Philadelphia\, the birth place of the Marine Corps\, to every ‘clime and place where we could take a gun\,’ the Marines have an illustrious history of service to our Nation. Highlights and personal anecdotes will be presented in this fast-paced journey through 250 years of living up to the Marine Corps motto of\, “Semper Fidelis” or Always Faithful.” \nPresented by LtCol Donna Bergstrom\, who retired from the United States Marine Corps Reserve in 2010. She obtained her reserve commission through the United States Marine Corps’ Officer Candidate School (OCS-87) as a Second Lieutenant in December of 1987. She graduated from The Basic School in June 1988 with a Military Occupational Speciality (MOS) in Signals Intelligence/Electronic Warfare Officer. She went on to serve over twenty years with assignment highlights of: Commanding Officer\, Galeta Island\, Republic of Panama; Detachment Commander\, Misawa\, Japan; and Military liaison\, for Senator Mikulski\, Washington\, DC.

SUMMARY:National POW/MIA Recognition Day
DESCRIPTION:National POW/MIA Recognition Day is the third Friday in September\nTo commemorate and honor those men and women who were prisoners or are still missing\, the Bong Veterans Center will set up the Missing Man table September 19-21st\, 2025. The table is a ceremonial memorial that honors and remembers prisoners of war\, missing in action\, and fallen service members. Every element on the table holds symbolic meaning. On Saturday\, September 20th\, 2025\, members of American Legion Post 435 will share those symbolic meanings in a special ceremony at 12:45pm. \nFollowing the POW/MIA ceremony\, we will be hosting Abby Allcox to speak from 1:00-2:00 pm. She will present a program on the WWII POW camps in Wisconsin. \nProgram Highlights: During World War II\, 39 prisoner-of-war camps housed captured German soldiers in Wisconsin. After the war\, the prisoners were sent home\, and the camps were mostly forgotten. However\, in 2023\, the logbook of Fort McCoy’s POW Camp Commander\, Lieutenant Colonel Horace I. Rogers\, was recovered. Its daily entries provide glimpses into the everyday events of the camp\, ranging from the mundane to the news-worthy. This presentation will highlight key discoveries from the logbook and provide new insights into the inner workings of an oft-forgotten aspect of Homefront history.
