Most Minnesotans can relate to long drives -- a couple hours to the cabin or a couple hours to the cities -- you let your mind wander, you take in the scenery and you think about past experiences and memories. Adu Gindy has taken this universal experience and translated it into painting in her new exhibit now open at the Duluth Art Institute: Bits and Pieces: A Visual Journey. Using 12" x 12" square canvases filled with echoes of her daily experiences and arranged in uniform patterns, she creates a comic book style story line of her journeys for the viewer to decode. Sep 1st- Dec 31st: Tweed Museum of Art presents Aristide Pappas
Time: Museum Hours: Tues 9 am - 8pm, Wed - Fri 9 am -4:30 pm, Sat & Sun 1-5 p.m
Pappas' work creates its own fictional space, where private symbolism, ancient symbols, and nature as a primal force coexist. It shares some familiar territory with American abstraction of the 1960s, but it also carves out its own space, fueled by Pappas' own mysterious narrative. As Pappas titled a 1981 drawing, they are like "illustrations for an unwritten story." Before his death in 1991, Pappas selected a core group of artworks to donate to the Tweed Museum of Art, representing his life's work. The rest, including notebook after notebook of fictional writing, he systematically destroyed in a bonfire.Free and open to the public. Held at the Tweed Museum of Art.

Sep 11th: "C.S.I. Pacific: Technical Air Intelligence Units and the 5th Air Force 1942-45"
Time: 10 am
Jim Hencinski provides another of his fascinating programs on little-know aspects of military history, this time focusing on the Technical Air Intelligence Units-South West Pacific Area (TAIU) which located and salvaged wrecked Japanese aircraft from the jungles of New Guinea and other islands for testing and evaluation. It was the TAIU that provided confirming evidence that Dick Bong had broken WWI fighter pilot Eddie Rickenbacker's record of 26 victories when it located the wreckage of Bong's 27th victory in April 1944. The TAIU-SWPA rebuilt and test flew more than 30 different examples of Japanese aircraft to learn their strengths and weaknesses. The TAIU also developed the simple system of identifying Japanese aircraft by using common names like 'Betty', 'Val' or 'Tony.' FREE PROGRAM-Held in the Bong Center Classroom at the Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center.

Sep 23rd: The DECC presents American Music Legend -John Prine
Time: 8 PM
There are very few treasures that arrive with a battered acoustic guitar and open up the windows on basic lives with passion and grace. But when John Prine hits the road, the darkest corners and smallest joys get illuminated by the light of his gravelly, utterly American voice, his way with the plainest of language and the vintage Guild and Martin guitars he plays. Among the numerous awards Prine has won throughout his extensive musical career, he was named the Artist Of The Year at the 2005 Americana Music Awards, and most recently, he took home the Grammy Award in 2006 for Best Contemporary Folk Album for Fair & Square. Tickets $52.50/$42.50+applicable fees(all seats reserved). Held at the DECC.
